"I’ll do it as long as I’m alive."

"You won’t be able to come here, nor will you be able to see it."

"In the 15th year of the Republic, namely 1926, the Germans had the white windows installed on the battlements and erected the railings below. Now, we’re heading east to Langfang’ertiao. My family’s lived there for generations. A distant ancestor Yang Changsheng, who was known as Shaoting, was a minor official during the reign of Ming Emperor Jiajing."

Mr Yang is a pedicab driver who’s well known around Qianmen, because he talks so much. He grew up in southern Beijing, and has a whole fund of anecdotes about old Beijing.

He loves to tell people about them. With all the changes around Qianmen, his desire to talk just grows stronger.

"Feng’s Baodu Restaurant is up ahead. Feng’s Baodu Restaurant uses sesame and braised toufu in its sauces."

Entering the palace refers to the fact that the family began its service for the imperial family during the reign of Emperor Guangxu. Up ahead is Snack Street, with many small restaurants. There are too many things around Qianmen to mention them all."

Mr Yang can’t go into great detail about Feng’s Baodu Restaurant. It’s a famous old brand around Qianmen with over 100 years of history, but business seems quite poor now, while just a year ago, it was very brisk.

A year ago, Feng’s Baodu Restaurant and the neighbouring time-honoured brands were busier than ever. Old patrons and new customers were flocking here, on the news of a pending renovation. The renovation of Qianmen, after two years, had finally reached Langfang’ertiao, the street of traditional snacks.
