In the summer of 1997, Liu Juan, a student of scriptwriting at the Central Drama School, rejected a job opportunity recommended to her by her father, also a playwright. Instead she started a theater workshop with a group of young people, and prepared them for their first commercial performance.

They’d been rehearsing their play for over two moths. It involved more than 20 people. As the day of the first performance drew closer and closer, everybody became eager to see what would happen. Several of the people involved in the studio were from other provinces, and they had to rent a place to live.

It was the day of the performance. However, they still didn’t have a licence. Without it, they couldn’t perform in public.

The next day, Liu Juan and Cui Meng arrived very early outside the Administration Office.

While they were waiting for the performing licence, all the actors were staying at Liu Juan’s home. The days passed, but there was still no sign of the licence.
