During the 80’s, a new profession emerged, known as “fashion design.” Most Chinese, however, are no strangers to this trade as it bears a striking resemblance to the art of Chinese tailoring.

By 1997, she had this set of designs, products and sales, constituting a complete Chinese fashion boutique. The shop is located on the north end of San Li Tun, Beijing's famous bar street, also close to Beijing’s diplomatic quarter. It has attracted, wives of diplomats intrigued by Chinese style, and white-collar women who come for extravagant, custom-made garments. Because of the excellent quality of Gu Lin’s work and her forthright attitude when dealing with clients, the shop is attracting more patrons.

It was at this time when Gu Lin met Yang Erche Namu. Just after the little boutique opened, Yang Erche Namu was one of the very first customers. After seeing Gu Lin's inventory, she simply couldn’t leave. Since that ten years ago, the two have an unbreakable bond.

Once, Namu was wearing a black pair of pants with a lotus design from Gu Lin’s boutique. At the time, she was strolling casually down Champs Elysees Avenue in France, when a popular French movie star began to follow her, commending her for her unrivaled fashion.

Gu Lin, however, the very designer whose pants caused such a commotion, was actually only a graduate of Beijing’s Jingsong Vocational High School’s tailoring class. After graduating, she was assigned to a collective clothing processing plant as a skilled worker. First, she made suits and denim work uniforms every day, and then gradually progressed to making things like pillows and clothes for the deceased.

During that era, no one wore the clothes she designed, so in order to further her education, Gu Lin designed and fabricated clothing for a television series set in ancient times. This was a great experience for her as it laid a solid foundation for the fashion boutique she would open in the future.

Taking the clothes he had designed with him to France, Xie Feng held his own independent fashion show at the Louvre. Xie was the first Chinese designer ever to be invited to the French Fashion Week. Xie Feng hoped to give the world a taste of Chinese charm and fashion.

In 1984, after graduating from Zhejiang’s Polytechnic University with a major in Textile Design, Xie Feng stayed at the school to become a teacher. At that time, China’s fashion world was still without stage on which to display designers’ artistic talent.

As for the soon to be successful Xie Feng, he was already looking forward to the newest target: fashion designers. After a few years, he finally gave up his enviable position at the university and struck out for Japan where he became an impoverished student. Whatever the case, at last he was able to enroll in the fashion design class he had long-dreamed of.

This puzzled Xie Feng. He had travelled from afar to study fashion design; what did rocks have to do with fashion design?
