The building of the Civil Affairs Bureau of Beichuan has been razed to the ground. Wang Hongfa, the Director General of the Bureau, is one of just nine staff to have

survived. Now the nine Bureau workers are busy keeping rescue teams and quake victims supplied with what they need, and after six days of this intense work, Wang

Hongfa cannot wipe from his mind some of the most horrifying scenes of devastation brought about by the massive earthquake.

2.28 pm on May 12th, 2008. A time now engraved on the memory of all Chinese people. In an instant an act of nature hits China’s Wenchuan Coiunty causing destruction

on an unprecedented scale.

The earth shook violently for a full 80-seconds, and when the earth stopped shaking tens of thousands of people were lying buried under ruins. All of a sudden, we

became aware that life is fragile. / In Sichuan Province, Beichuan, Qingchuan, Li County, Shifang, Mianzhu and Pengzhou are the areas most badly damaged by the

Weak calls can be heard coming from under the rubble as the families of those trapped wait on with expectant eyes. Everything to be done will be carried out with just

In all the quake-hit areas, the rescue work is racing against time and every rescuer does everything possible for the sake of life. One after another people are saved

from death, but more lives remain buried in the debris. Time has never been as precious as it is now, and the rescue workers have never worked as tirelessly as they

do now.

Finding that one glimmer of hope for survival is both a battle and a race, as with every passing moment lives are passing away.

After the earthquake hit Wenchuan, a Yunnan-based military unit led by Division Commander Qu Xinyong marches in double time to the disaster area. They become the first
