The picture of the two little hands tightly holding each other not only touched all those who saw it: it also brought them great pain, as they knew that thousands of children died like these two died in the earthquake.

The Wenchuan earthquake has left many buried in darkness: father and son, mother and daughter, brothers and sisters. But the light of humanity will never be dimmed, and it has continued to shine through the tragedy.

Dujiangyan is one of the areas most devastated by the earthquake.

Beginning on May 13th, various rescue teams began searching for and rescuing survivors buried underneath the ruins, despite the dangers posed by constant aftershocks. One of those who took part in rescue operations that day was Dr. Gong Jin of East China Hospital of Zhongshan University.

As he and other rescuers were removing blocks of reinforced concrete twisted by the earthquake, a shocking scene was revealed in front of them.

When Gong Jin returned to the ruins, the mother was confirmed to be dead. She had died some time before as her body was already stiff.

Even in the final moments of her life, this mother had still managed to breastfeed her baby. Even when faced with death, she never gave up.

But in the wake of the earthquake, stories such as this one were not at all uncommon. Another story widely told in the media tells of a young woman found dead in the ruins of Beichuan on May 13th.

The position she was found in was unusual: her knees were on the ground, and she was supporting her upper body with her hands pressing against the ground. The weight of the collapsed house had twisted her body, but, even so, she had managed to maintain this strange position. It was a discovery that caught the attention of the rescuers. Eventually, they found under the woman’s arched body…a baby sleeping peacefully.

When the doctors examined the baby, in the quilt in which the baby was wrapped they found a mobile phone. On the screen was an unsent message. It read, “Dear baby, if you survive, please remember that I love you.” When the earthquake hit, the mother had committed her life to the survival of her child.

During the Wenchuan earthquake it was the urban parts of Beichuan County that were devastated the most. Almost everything was leveled in the space of just a few minutes. It is the morning of May 14th, and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has stopped here to assess the situation. Several armed policemen bearing a stretcher are running toward him. Without hesitation, the Prime Minister steps out of the way so the rescuers can pass unhindered.

The little girl on the stretcher is Song Xinyi. At 8 AM, on May 13th, the rescue forces in Beichuan had come across a devastating scene in the corner of a collapsed house. A wall had fallen 4 or 5 meters trapping two adults underneath.
