Qingming Festival is a traditional holiday in China for mourning the dead. In 1976, crowds gathered in Tian'anmen Square at Qingming Festival to pay homage to Premier Zhou Enlai, who had just died. What later became known as the April the 5th Incident developed into a protest against the Gang of Four.

Li Xiaobin was 21 years old and working at the Museum of Chinese History on one side of Tian’anmen Square. Using his camera, he recorded the events that unfolded that day.

Many other young photographers were taking pictures at Tian’anmen Square that day. Several of the photographs they took have become well known, including “Unite for Tomorrow” by Wu Peng, “Making Vigorous Efforts to Turn the Tide” by Luo Xiaoyun, and “Let’s Shed Blood Together” by Wang Liping.
