In 1978, the animated film ‘The Monkey King’ took the best film award at the London International Film Festival.

The film is based on the Chinese classic, ‘Journey to the West’. It tells the story of the Monkey King’s rebellion against the Palace of Heaven. In 1962, the first part of the film won a special prize for short films at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in Czechoslovakia. Two years later, the second part of the film was completed – only to be banned by the authorities.

In 1976, Jin Guoping graduated from high school and found work as a junior artist with the Shanghai Animated Film Studio. At the time, the Studio was suffering from a shortage of skilled workers, because for the ten years of the Cultural Revolution, it had been unable to recruit young talent. Therefore, as soon as the Studio resumed production, Jin Guoping was given the opportunity to become involved in the production of an animated film as a storyboard painter. The film was ‘A Night in the Gallery'.

A Night in the Gallery tells the story of two trouble-makers, Cane and Stick, who sneak into a children’s art gallery and attack the works of art. Eventually, they are beaten into submission by the human and animal characters in the works.

1979 was the first year of China’s reform and opening. It was also the 30th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic. To mark the occasion, people from all walks of life were making breakthroughs. In literary and arts circles, many films and stage plays were scheduled for performance in the period from January to October. But so many of them were produced that the performances continued until February of the following year.
