The choir is singing hymns in a church. The candlesticks in front of the altar emit a gentle light, like little lighthouses lighting up the way for lost souls. Candlesticks are common in western homes. Silver candlesticks, forged into different shapes and carved with various patterns, are placed as decorations before religious icons, on top of mantelpieces, or in cabinets. In China, people are also fond of candlesticks. The golden candlesticks and red candles seen at traditional Chinese weddings add to the festive atmosphere.

Beijing’s Forbidden City houses a very special candlestick – one that is made neither of gold nor of silver. The candlestick is in the shape of a small plate. In the middle is a gilded bronze bottle with outstretched candle holders. People often wonder what is so special about this candlestick, that it should be kept as a national treasure. The answer lies inside the candlestick. It’s enameled in blue, and decorated with designs of white, red and yellow gardenias.
