From Noah’s Ark in the Bible and the control of the floods by Yu the Great of China, human history has regularly been marked by tales of flooding.
Rivers can be quick to lose their tempers; yet they are also a source of life for human beings. The four great ancient civilizations of the world all originated along major rivers. Throughout the ages, human beings have been engaged in a constant struggle to make the best use of water, at the same time as preventing the potential disasters it threatens.
