It’s May the 12th, 2004, and scientists at the Chengdu Giant Panda Research Base have discovered that a female panda is showing signs of being on heat. The panda is called Er Yatou.Zhang Zhihe, Giant Panda Breeder, said, "The giant panda was restless. She was looking for a mate. And she was rubbing her behind, making marks, as if to say she was ready."

The scientists send Ha Nan, a male giant panda, into Er Yatou’s cage.Ha Nan was a normal, good-tempered giant panda and he was considered a good match. However, things are not working out as planned. The scientists find Ha Nan lying on the ground in a pool of blood. Zhang Zhihe rushes to the scene as soon as he hears. The discovery is a disaster for Zhang Zhihe, who is in charge of the giant panda breeding programme.
