Hongkong has enjoyed a sharp economic recovery over the past 18 months and unemployment has dropped from eight to six percent.
Economists say that the boom of the tourism industry has boosted the local development and that CEPA also contributes a lot. Yet, for a while, ties between some democrats in Hongkong and the mainland decline because many in the HK SAR are not accustomed to the concept of having a country. They demand direct elections and question the anti-subversion law. Some even appeal to Americans for help. But the central government says it a abides by the Basic Law while retaining the rights of paraphrasing the interpretations of laws in HK. How shall we look at the stability and prosperity?
