Even the most demanding critics of China have to admit that the one-country two systems policies toward Macao testify to the pragmatism and flexibility鈥檚 of domestic China鈥檚 policies. The huge lucrative casino industry, the hallmark of Macao鈥檚 economy, for example, is allowed to prosper after China resumed its sovereignty after its handover in 1999. The SAR government broke over its 32-year-old monopoly by introducing overseas competition from Les Vegas. And for the sake of image, the city diversifies its economic structure by combining the casino operation with entertainment and lottery. Therefore, the local education has got necessary funds.
