One of the key events marking the one-year countdown to the Shanghai World Expo was World Music Week. It wrapped up on Tuesday, and the last concerts were performed by a Shanghai band and an Indian Tabla master.

Dressed in grey robes, the musicians of the Armirita Band touched audiences with a somber reflection on the evolution of traditional Chinese music. The ethnic melodies of western China were played out in all their richness through a smooth blend of Chinese instruments and the accordion.

Lin Jian, art director of Shanghai World Music Week said, "The motif of the music festival is 'fusion'. It boasts modern artists reinterpreting traditional music in their own ways. By breathing new life into the music, its existence is prolonged."

The second half of the closing concert was given by Grammy Award-winning Tabla player, Zakir Hussain, who sent the audience on a journey exploring the esoteric music traditions of India.

The colorfully eclectic World Music Week opened on April 30th, and presenting some of the most recognizable musicians from around the world.
