One of the world's most famous and commercially successful contemporary artists, Hirst has opened a huge show in Kiev. It features a retrospective of more than 100 sculptures and installations made since 1990 and a collection of oil paintings, most of which have never been exhibited.

The most successful of the so-called "Young British Artists," Hirst rose to prominence in the 1990s. One of his main themes is the impossibility of accepting mortality. And he is famous for flirting with the topic of death by displaying pickled animals, rotting cows' heads and diamond-encrusted skulls.

Artist Damien Hirst said, "I think it is semantics but, I think we... Death is unavoidable unfortunately you know we don't like it but I think by looking at it hopefully you can beware of it and maybe live life a bit fuller and a bit more exited and I really like the quote where they say ' In life we are here for a good time if we are lucky, not a long time ' so enjoy it while you can. "

Last year, Hirst defied sceptics and the global economic downturn and sold a number of his works for close to 200 million US dollars at Sotheby's, making it the most expensive auction of works by a single artist.

The Kiev show will run until September.
