Bao Sheng is worshipped as a god in the Chinese mainland's Fujian province and on Taiwan island. Bao Sheng literally means "Guard Life." It is a legendary figure from the Song Dynasty who is said to have had magic medical skills and saved countless lives. People across the Taiwan Strait believe Bao Sheng can keep them healthy and safe. A cultural festival celebrating this legendary figure was held in Xiamen on Saturday.

Over six thousand believers convened at the temple enshrining Bao Sheng on Saturday morning. Bao Sheng is worshipped across the Strait with over three hundred temples in its name.

The believers used both Mandarin and a local dialect to read odes worshipping the god.

The Bao Sheng cultural festival includes activities on traditional Chinese medicine, calligraphy and painting. Celebrations run for three days.

Two thousand believers came from Taiwan to attend the event.
