Zhang Yimou arrived in Hainan on Monday afternoon, ahead of the evening premiere. It was his first official meeting with media after the 2008 Olympics. He says the connection between the stage and water is one of the most satisfying parts.
Zhang Yimou, the chief director of "Impression Hainan" said, "I think the design of the stage and water is great. The two directors have overcome lots of difficulties behind it. We made it in our own creative way for a fine effect. I think it's better than the one in Las Vegas."
"Impression Hainan" is the brain child of Zhang Yimou and colleagues Wang Chaoge and Fan Yue. It's Zhang's newest project in landscape dramas, following three other Impressions: Sister Liu, Lijiang, and West Lake.

Zhang Yimou said, "There are two major tasks we have to achieve in one short year. We want to create a new drama in a new open air stage. And we have to train the amateurs to be professional such as fishermen from Yangshuang, ethnic minorities from Yuanna and local children. It's to establish a troupe with 3-4 hundred members. In all, we have to build a troupe and a theatre in a year. There's no precedent. From this point of view, you can see how difficult the job is and how much we all have paid for it. I agree with Chao Ge's view that there is no perfect in art. There's much room to learn and improve."
The debut comes only a month after the first trial performance. During the last 30 days before it's was shown to public, changes were made and new elements added to emphasize Hainan's natural beauty.
