The UK Government has launched a new initiative encouraging better labor practices and more recycling schemes across the fashion industry. The Sustainable Clothing Action plan comes as London Fashion Week gets underway.

Using the Estethica show as a platform, the Sustainability Minister launched the scheme to make fashion less damaging to the environment.

The UK Sustainability Minister Lord Philip Hunt said, "The UK has always been a leading country in fashion design - we have some of the most brilliant clothes designed here. And now we have sustainable clothing with brilliant design and we are going to show the world that sustainable clothing is great; great because it contributes to a good and decent climate and society and great because the clothes themselves are brilliant to wear."

The minister says the UK's clothing and textile sector produces over 3 million tons of carbon dioxide a year. And one-and-ahalf million tons of unwanted clothing ultimate end up in landfill.

More than 300 members of the UK fashion industry from farmer to retailer have committed to take action. They include high street giants Tesco and Marks and Spencer.

Climate change, recycling and garment worker exploitation are key issues. London Fashion Week 2009 demonstrates that collections can be eco-friendly. And with a concerted effort, the UK industry is confident of changing the face of fashion.
