China's historically important Qinghai province has many local legends. The far-flung region is the cradle of Chinese civilization and is where the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers take their source. A theatrical extravaganza showcases Qinghai legends debuted at Beijing's Poly Theater on Friday night, captivating the audience with the magic of northwest China's plateau region.

The song and dance drama "Mystic Land of Qinghai" uses folk legends as its main theme, including the legend of Xi Wang Mu, a goddess popular in the region, and legends surrounding Kunlun mountain.

The drama's six acts are "Magic Bird's Tears", "Love Story of the Source of Three Rivers", "Son of the Tribe of the Sun", "Mountain in the Desert", "Tale of Light and Shadow" and "Life Cycles Under the Tree". The epic creates a poetic dreamland, awing spectators with the profound history and culture of Qinghai.

The two and a half hour show was very well received by the audience. It is being compared favorably to another great epic tale -- renowned dancer Yang Liping's "Magic of Tibet".
