Special Report: 2009 Spring FestivalPreparations are winding up for CCTV's annual much-anticipated Spring Festival Gala. This year the comedy show known as Xiangsheng is tipped to be a new audience favorite.
The gala show will feature six Xiangsheng acts this year. |
Jiang Kun is a prominent comedian specializing in Xiangsheng, the traditional comedy show resembling crosstalk. This year, he is back with an ambitious act titled "My Mind Boggles". Jiang Kun took part in the first CCTV Spring Festival Gala in 1984, which also featured performances by other Xiangsheng comedians like Ma Ji.
But Xiangsheng's popularity faded as short sketches won over more comedy fans. By the late 1990s, Xiangsheng's presence at the gala show had been drastically diminished. Over the past five years, the four-hour gala has featured no more than three Xiangsheng acts. This year, the gala's chief director hopes Xiangsheng will have a revival.

Organizers say the gala show will feature six Xiangsheng acts this year. And several innovations will make the performances more entertaining. Several different styles of Xiangsheng comedians feature in the same act to display the diversity of the age-old stage art.
