One of China's biggest ethnic groups is the 6.5 million Yi population that lives in Yunnan province in southwest China. To ensure their culture is properly maintained, the Chu Xiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture has set up the institute of Meige Heritage and a research center for Yi embroidery.

Meige refers to a school of singing, usually adapted to sing the Yi epic. Originating in a village, the Meige culture was among the first things named to the Intangible Cultural Heritage List. In June 2008, the Meige culture also made into the national list for heritage protection.
