Special Report:   2009 Spring Festival

Beijing is laying out a host of measures to help people celebrate the lunar New Year. With the rich tourism resources of the capital, Beijing has lots to offer travelers during the Spring Festival holiday.

During the first week of the Lunar New Year, over 20 thousand tickets for some of the main tourism spots in Beijing will be given out free. These include the Summer Palace, the Temple of Heaven, and the Badaling section of the Great Wall.

For those planning to see some of Beijing's new landmarks, 10 thousand free tickets for the Water Cube and the Bird's Nest are on offer. More than 20 thousand lucky tourists will be able to visit the traditional temple fairs in the capital's main parks for free, including the ones at Chaoyang Park and the Temple of Earth.

Every day during the seven-day Spring Festival holiday, 208 hotel rooms are available for free. Included on the list are 39 star-level hotels in Beijing.

Besides high-end hotels, some hostels are also providing a favorable discount: one night only costs 50 yuan, or about 7 US dollars.

Another popular choice is to travel to the outskirts of Beijing and experience an authentic New year celebration. Local farmers will perform traditional dances, including a stilt show, a lion dance, and the Yangge dance, which dates back to the Song Dynasty, some 1,000 years ago, and is still popular in northern China.
