On the English channel of CCTV International, you'll soon be able to follow the 2008 CCTV Cup, English Speaking Contest. Tens of thousands of Chinese college students are ready to challenge their wit, eloquence, and most importantly, their English. They're vying for positions to the next round of the competition that ultimately will decide who is the most accomplished English Speaker among Chinese students.

20-year old Hu Guangzhao is called on to give an impromptu speech on the topic: What can London learn from Beijing's Olympics? He's had 30 minutes to prepare before stepping on stage.

Hu Guangzhao is an accounting major. He and 22 of his peers, are in the qualifying round of the CCTV Cup English Speaking Contest held at Beijing Forestry University.

Although the students major in diverse fields, all are dedicated students of English.

The English buzz is spreading all over China. Like Hu Guangzhao, tens of thousands of young hopefuls are polishing up their grammar and syntax, hoping for a place in the final round of the CCTV English Speaking Contest. Only 23 will qualify to move on for the final round at the CCTV Beijing studios.
