The roses in Shenzhen's Renmin Park have earned admiration around the world. More than two million people have come to see them in the southern Chinese city, over the years. Now the exquisite floral displays appear bound for recognition as a "Rose Garden of Excellence." It would be the first garden in China to achieve the distinction.

There are over ten thousand rose bushes in the park, more than 100 species of roses. But the crowning glory are the 23 precious ancient Chinese roses.

The exhibition in Renmin park has been open for ten years. Aside from layout and presentation, among the most important standards for achieving the "Garden of Excellence" designation is the number and diversity of roses.

The designation of "Garden of Excellence" is made by the World Federation of Rose Societies at its semi annual meeting. 21 parks around the globe have earned the designation so far. The next round of deliberations takes place in Vancouver, Canada next June.
