Kunqu Opera, honored on UNESCO's World Heritage List, is more than six hundred years old. This year, the ancient stage tradition plays a part in the cultural exchange between China and Japan. Artists from the two countries will join forces to present a stellar production of the play "Peony Pavilion". Written by Tang Xianzu, a playwright who lived about the same time as Shakespeare, "Peony Pavilion" tells a story about love and courage. It has fascinated audiences for centuries. The show is jointly produced by the Jiangsu Kunqu Opera Theater and the Shochiku Company from Japan and will star artists from both countries. It will hit the stage in Kyoto in March and comes to Beijing in May.
