An exhibition commemorating the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China from Britain, will open at Beijing's Capital Museum on Thursday.

The display items include photographs, stamps, models, videos and cultural relics. The exhibition is sponsored by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

It will showcase the successful implementation of the "one country, two systems" policy, and the achievements of Hong Kong in such areas as economy, tourism and culture.

Other subjects covered include sport, environmental protection and the co-operation between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland over the past 10 years since the handover on July 1, 1997.

Thomas Tso, Director of the HKSAR Representative Office in Beijing, said at a press conference held on June 21 that the exhibition is the most important of all Beijing-based events celebrating Hong Kong's return.

He added that he hopes the exhibition will give mainland people a better understanding about every aspect of Hong Kong.

The exhibition's opening ceremony on Wednesday was attended by Chinese Vice-President Zeng Qinghong; State Councillor Tang Jiaxuan, Secretary of Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China Liu Qi, Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office Liao Hui, Head of United Front Work Department Liu Yandong and HKSAR Chief Executive Donald Tsang, as well as nearly 200 government officials and guests.

Chinese top leaders Hu Jintao, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinlin, Wu Guanzheng, Li Changchun and Luo Gan also visited the exhibition after the opening ceremony on Wednesday.

During a speech delivered at the ceremony, Donald Tsang spoke highly of the "One Country, Two Systems" concept. He also expressed the belief that Hong Kong's future is bright.

He said Hong Kong's achievements over the past 10 years have provided convincing proof concerning the great success of the "One Country, Two Systems" and the Basic Law of HKSAR. With the support of the Chinese central government and Chinese people, Hong Kong was able to overcame a series of hardships, like the Asia financial crisis and SARS epidemic.

Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai, who also attended the ceremony, said the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong will have further contact in the fields of service and trade under the CEPA agreement.
