Special Report:   HK 10 Years

The 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland is just around the corner. To warm up the festival atmosphere, and a number of cultural activities have been taking place. At an art expo in Hong Kong, Chinese mainland folk artists display their creations.

Around 30 folk artists and handicraftsmen from around the nation participate in the fair. They showcase their time-perfected techniques by making pieces on the spot. On show, works representing regional specializations: pyrography on gourds from central China's Henan Province, bamboo handicrafts from Sichuan Province, puppets from the eastern province of Fujian, as well as paper kites, and traditional Chinese knots that symbolize peace and fortune.

It is the first expo of traditional Chinese folk art treasure to be held in Hong Kong, and wins warm applause from local residents.

A Suzhou embroidery artist said, "Hong Kong people put two thumbs up to the traditional art from east China. It is extremely exquisite and takes quite long time to finish. They are totally impressed."

A HK resident said, "We seldom get the chance to enjoy traditional Chinese art. It's great to know more about our homeland."

The display of such traditional crafts gives people in Hong Kong the chance to learn more about the roots of Chinese culture - bringing their hearts closer to the motherland.
