Special Report: Cultural Heritage DayKites have a history going back more than two and half thousand years in China. They were invented by Lu Ban, a master carpenter and builder. Originally a military tool they started being used as toys during the Tang Dynasty. It's a pass time that's still very popular today.
On Sunday morning, kite masters from across the country gathered to compete in this year's National Kite Championships.
Hundreds of kites filled the sky. The white one with the logo of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games grabs the most attention. After all, it is the biggest kite in China, at 138 square meters, and Sunday was its first flight.
A contestant said, "We made it to celebrate the Beijing Olympics. It takes more than 10 people to fly it and the string is a centimeter and a half thick."
