The Festival of Russian culture is a significant part of all activities within the Year of Russia in China.

The main goal of the Festival is to widely present the variety of Russian culture to the maximum of population and age groups. The Festival is also aimed at contributing to the expansion of the Russian-Chinese intercourse in different spheres of cooperation, establishment of new cultural contacts, consolidation of strategic partnership, bringing the youth of the two Great Powers to the cultural dialogue.

As part of the official ceremony opening the Year of the Russian Federation in the People’s Republic of China where the President RF Vladimir Putin and the Chairman Hu Tszintao will take part, on March 21, 2006, in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, a gala concert will be carried out featuring opera, ballet and orchestra stars from the State Academic Bolshoi Theater of Russia, the leading Russian theater that has played a significant role in the establishment and development of national traditions in the art of opera and ballet.

The baton of the festival will be passed on to the oldest theater of Russia – State Academic Malyi Theater with the production of "Enough Stupidity in Every Wise Man" by the great dramatist A.N.Ostrovsky. There will be performances of Anton Chekhov Moscow Academic Art Theater with Maxim Gorky’s "The Petty Bourgeois. The play "Wolves and Sheep" directed by Petr Fomenko, in the contemporary impersonation of young talented actors from "Petr Fomenko’s Workshop" Moscow theater, will offer to the Chinese audience a completely different view on this not simple comedy.

Moscow Musical Theater "Helikon-Opera" will perform within its tour Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera "Tsar’s Bride" which makes up the "golden fund" of the Russian musical culture. The Tchaikovsky State Academic Big Symphonic Orchestra (artistic director - V. Fedoseev) and the "Moscow Virtuosi" Chamber Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Spivakov will perform the best pieces by Russian composers.

The leading ballet dancers from the State Academic Bolshoi Theater, Mariinsky Theater and Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theater will present the program "Russian Ballet Stars" as part of their autumn tour.

During the celebration of Day of Russia on June 12 in Beijing, on one of the central squares, the light-and-music show will be presented by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, which will involve popular performers from Russia and China.

The performances by young talented artists with the program “Young Talents of Russia” and by rock-group "Mumiy Troll" are aimed at contributing to the development of youth contacts. The performance of "Mumiy Troll" group is timed for the celebration of Day of Youth in China.

At the Russian Folk Arts Festival "City of Craftsmen" timed for the celebration of the date of diplomatic relations between Russia and China, there will be presented handiworks of folk crafts and items of decorative applied arts from different regions of our countries (wood painting and carving, gzhel, chohloma, famous shawls from Pavlov-Posad and Orenburg, samovars from Tula, and many more).

The folk art of Russia will be presented by the tour performances of the State Academic Choreographic Ensemble "Berezka". Its program will include flowing female roundelays, lyrical dancing miniatures, hot and joky dances, which reproduce in poetic choreographic images the Russian old style with its way of life and rites.

As part of the festival, a large exhibition program will be carried out. The exhibition "Three centuries of Russian art. Masterpieces of the State Tretyakov Gallery collection" will show the contribution of Russia to the world painting culture, will define the peculiarity of its spiritual and esthetic searches, the special path of the development of Russian art. The exhibition "The Truth of Life. The Poetry of Art." will introduce to the Chinese audience the best pieces of Russian realistic painting of the second half of the 19th century, which is known as the most interesting epoch in the history of the Russian art. The exhibition "People’s Parade" is in some way a presentation of the nations of Russia and the neighboring countries which used to make up the Russian Empire. The exhibition "The City of the Sun. Triumph of the Socialist Realism. Soviet painting of the 1930s-1950s" is concentrated on the best years of Soviet art – from the end of 1920’s till the end of 1930’s, including several interesting works created after this period.

During the whole year it is planned to conduct film festivals aimed at introducing to the Chinese audience different aspects of Russian cinematography. Thus, in May – June, in Beijing, there will be shown retrospective Russian movies, in June – August, in Shanghai and Chanchun – Russian movies as part of international film festivals. In September, the "Week of Russian Cinema" will take place, where new Russian films will be presented, and also, an already traditional "Amur Autumn" film festival. Moreover, an interesting film project "But the dawns are quiet here.32 years later." is planned to be carried out in Harbin.

Besides, as part of cultural activities, meetings with outstanding culture and art figures, master-classes of the leading educators in different fields are expected to take place.

Beside Beijing, Russian art teams will perform in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenyan and other cities of China.

The program of the festival will be very intense, oriented on different population layers and age groups, and will give its guests a good chance to enjoy the well-known masterpieces and come in touch with new achievements of contemporary Russia.
