Political commentator, Dr. Gao Zhikai |
Q1: Dr. Gao, China is gradually adopting lethal injection for execution to replace gunshot. But various difficulties mean there's going to be a long transition period. Some regions will start using lethal injection earlier than others. Do you think this transition period will create injustice or loopholes in the judicial system?
Q2: Public opinion is hard to budge on the matter of punishing criminals. A common belief is that notorious criminals must be severely punished to carry out justice and serve as a deterrent. How do you think this attitude can be changed?
Q3: Last year, the government revised its death penalty law. The Supreme Court was empowered to review death sentences, to reduce the chances of wrong judgments. This and other moves such as using lethal injections, are signals that China is making its legal system more professional and humane. Do you think this will also lead to a significant reduction in the number of death sentences in the future?
