This is Golden Bauhinia Square, outside the Convention and Exhibition Center where Hong Kong was officially returned to China 12 years ago.

A flag raising ceremony was held earlier on Wednesday to mark the anniversary. Officials from the Hong Kong SAR government, as well as more than 1,000 Hong Kong residents attended the ceremony.

In a later banquet inside the Convention Center, Donald Tsang looked back at the long way Hong Kong has come since 1997 and looked to the city's future.

Donald Tsang, Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive, said, "Since the return, Hong Kong has overcome challenges, big and small. We have confidence to boost economy, cater to people's livelihoods, and fight against the influenza. Most importantly, we have the backing of our country, which bolstered our confidence and resolve to win the uphill battle."

In the city's main stadium, the Chinese troops stationed in the Special Administrative Region held art performances and also flag-raising ceremony.

Outside the stadium and on the city streets, mass parades and traditional Chinese dances were part of the celebration.

12 years after the hand over of Hong Kong, cooperation between the mainland and Hong Kong has flourished. And latest surveys show an increasing number of Hong Kong people feel a stronger identification now with being Chinese.
