Both were important platforms for China and the US to exchange views on strategic, political and economic issues.

The new mechanism was jointly launched by presidents Hu Jintao and Barack Obama during their meeting in London in April.

In 2004, China and the US reached a consensus on promoting a constructive strategic partnership and regular dialogue. In August 2005, the first round of Strategic Dialogue was held in Beijing.

In 2006, another dialogue, the Strategic Economic Dialogue, was launched to deal with issues critical to longer-term bilateral relations.

So far, five rounds of talks have been held with discussions including macro-economy, energy, environment, trade, investment, financial services, innovation and international economic cooperation.
