The central CBD covers nearly three square kilometers of eastern downtown Beijing. In the next phase, the area will be expanded by three square kilometers eastward. It will eventually extend to the East Fourth Ring Road, with Chaoyang North Road as the northern border, and the Tonghui River at the southern edge.
Seven world-class design studios have already shown their interest in the project. Among them are U.S.-based SOM and an Engineering and Architecture Subsidiary of Aeroports de Paris. The concept for the Beijing CBD project will focus on an environmentally harmonious design that is suitable for future development.
Wu Guiying, Director of Beijing CDB Administrative Comm. said "The expansion project will highlight the concept of variety. The existing and expanded parts will be effectively connected, featuring harmony, a green environment and security."
The assembled plans will be assessed in October and the results will later be published on line. At present, the Beijing CBD area includes 130 enterprises which are listed among the top 500 companies in the world. It also includes over 200 overseas financial institutions. The CBD administrative commission says the expansion work will take between 6 and 8 years to complete.
