The Bank of China is hoping to be the first Mainland lender to open a branch in Taiwan. Bank president Li Lihui says he'll visit the island in September with this mission in mind. Li announced the news after meeting a financial delegation from Taiwan.

BOC has been preparing to enter the Taiwan market since the second meeting between the heads of the cross-Straits organizations of the two sides. It hopes its Taiwan branch will be operational by the end of the year.

The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the Bank of Communications, and the China Construction Bank have also applied to the banking regulator for approval to set up branches in Taiwan.
