China is boosting the development of its new-energy industry. According to an official from the National Energy Administration, a draft plan will soon be submitted to the State Council for approval.
China's plan for the new energy industry sought opinions from major enterprises, local governments, and various ministries. Now that those ideas have been discussed thoroughly, the National Development and Reform Commission will submit the final draft to the State Council.
Zhou Xian, an official from the National Energy Administration, said the global financial crisis is an opportunity to change the way China's energy industry will grow. He said at this time of slower economic growth and relatively light demand for energy, China should accelerate energy adjustments and push forward changes in the way the nation supplies power.
Zhou added China will step up efforts in developing new and renewable energy including hydro power, wind power, solar power, and even bio energy. By 2020, renewable energy, other than hydro-power, will climb to 6-percent of total energy consumption from its current 1.5-percent. In wind power, capacity will soon reach 10-million kilowatts, growing to 20-million by 2010, and to as much as 100-million by 2020.
The government's plan will also direct capital toward developing key technologies for nuclear and wind power development, as the country also considers adjusting its nuclear power development.
