A senior official of the country's top economic planning body believes the 8-percent growth target will definitely be met.

Director of the Department of Fiscal and Financial Affairs at the National Development and Reform Commission, Xu Lin, made the statement at a news conference in Hog Kong on Monday. He said that recent economic indicators from the first four months of the year point to China meeting its annual target.

But if the economy starts losing momentum, Beijing will step in again. The government has capital for more measures if necessary, and has not even allocated all of the 4-trillion yuan stimulus package announced last November.
