A new platform for exchanges among the public across the Taiwan Strait is about to be launched in the southeast Province of Fujian.

The Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council announced on Tuesday that the Straits Forum, opening on Friday, will be attended by senior officials, including Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Jia Qinglin and the Vice Chairman of the Kuomingtang, Chu Li-lun.

The spokesman of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, Yang Yi, says the preparatory work of the Straits Forum has gone smoothly. Around eight-thousand people from various social levels in Taiwan are expected to attend the forum. Officials, scholars and industry insiders from the mainland will also attend.

The spokesman also says the forum will focus on exchanges in both economic and cultural fields. And it aims to enlarge the general public's exchanges, enhance cross-strait cooperation and bolster mutual development.

Yang Yi, Spokesman of Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said "The Strait Forum aims to create a new platform for the general public's exchanges and communications across the Taiwan Strait. It's featured as a non-governmental and extensive event. And it stresses equal participation and exchanges."

Yang Yi also says the one-week event will cover major cities in Fujian Province, including Xiamen, Fuzhou and Quanzhou.

And it will include 18 major events, including the opening ceremony, a plenary meeting and the economic and trade fair.

In addition, the spokesman says the forum has taken effective measures to prevent and control the A-H1N1 flu to ensure the safety and success of the forum.
