A ceremony was held this morning at Tian'anmen Square, with top legislator Wu Bangguo attending. Wu said the Chinese people have long been looking forward to the event. He said it will reflect progress, world peace, friendship and cooperation.

Preparations for the event are going smoothly, with 234 countries and international organizations having confirmed their participation in the event. Some 40 countries and international organizations will have their own halls or pavilions at the Shanghai World Expo, half of which are under construction or finished.

The expo is expected to earn six billion yuan in ticket sales and expected to attract 70 million visitors. Five percent of them will be from overseas.
