Professor Yin Jia works at the renowned Peking Union Medical College Hospital. She complains about the low income of doctors.
Professor Yin Jia said, "Doctors in any country should have an income related to their skills. But our income is closely related to the medicine and equipment we use. That's wrong. And also, such a low income is unsatisfactory to doctors and nurses. They will find other ways to increase their incomes, such as secretly asking for bribes."
And, for another perspective on the story, we spoke to patients who worry the the price increase for medical services will add to their hardships.
A patient said, "Medicine costs and operation costs all require money. If the cost of medicine goes down, but the service costs increase. what's the difference for patients in the end?"
Li Weiping, researcher of Chinese MInistry of Health, said, "If we do not strengthen management, hospitals will receive subsidies from the government, while still taking money from the sale of medicines or suggesting unnecessary tests. After the launch of the new health care reform, we will have to keep an eye for any signs of bribery. "
