Special Report: Global Financial CrisisMACAO, March 11 (Xinhua) -- With orders dwindling, most of the manufacturers in Macao took a dismal view about the prospect of local industry exports in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to the results of the Industry Exports Survey released on Wednesday by the Economic Services of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).
The results of the survey showed that only 3.8 percent of the interviewed local manufacturers stayed "optimistic" about the exports prospect in the fourth quarter of last year, a 25.8 percent decrease over the same period of 2007, while 33.6 percent and 51.2 percent of them deemed the export volume will "slightly drop" and "drastically decrease" respectively.
During the period, the number of orders received by the manufacturers averaged 2.77 per month, decreasing by 16.1 percent year-on-year, and garment manufacturers acquired the largest number of orders with the figures standing at 2.99 per month.
As for the export markets, local manufacturers generally deemed that exports to the United States and the European Union stayed sound, while those to nations in other parts of Europe, Africa and Middle East showed poor performance, according to the survey results.
Some 71.8 percent and 70.6 percent of the interviewed manufacturers were faced with the problems of "shortage of orders" and "international competition" respectively, according to the survey results in the fourth quarters of last year.
In view of the first quarter of this year, the survey showed that 56.6 percent of the interviewed manufacturers believed "shortage of orders" will still be the biggest problems that they have to face.
