The annual NPC and CPPCC sessions are also hot topics among migrant workers. |
On a train from Sichuan province, where millions of migrant workers come from, to the eastern economic hub of Shanghai, many migrant workers say employment is their top concern.
One Sichuan migrant worker said "There is little land left at home to cultivate, so we really hope our employment will be taken care of at the meetings."
In general, they are confident that the current economic downturn will end soon because they have heard the government is making its best effort.
One Sichuan migrant worker said "It was so difficult in 2008 but China made it through with efforts from both people and the central party committee. We are confident we can overcome the difficulties in 2009. "
Researchers say migrant workers' employment and social security have become top concerns of both NPC deputies and CPPCC members. He expects some solid measures to come out in the annual meetings.
Li Junkui, Professor of Nanjing Industrial University said "China's migrant workers are no-longer just farmer-turned workers who keep moving from one place to another. Many are staying permanently in a certain urban area. So I hope the annual two sessions can talk about granting residential permits to migrant workers and allow them to share the social security and other economic benefits."
China has about 200 million migrant workers. It's estimated that 20 million of them have lost their jobs due to current economic downturn.
