SEOUL, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Mobile phone sales in South Korea dropped around 16 percent in February from a year before due to the sluggish economy, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported Monday.

The total amount of mobile phones sold last month came to 1.68 million units, down 16.4 percent from 2.01 million units in February 2008, according to the statistics by handset makers.

However, the February figure was an 8.6 percent increase from the January sales, which was attributed to back-to-school seasonal reason, according to Yonhap.

Samsung Electronics Co., the country's No.1 cell phone maker, said its sales stood around 840,000 units in February, followed by No. 2 producer LG Electronics Co., which said to have sold 501,000phones.

As of the end of 2008, 93 percent of the nation's population own cell phones, and every Korean household has an average of 2.73mobile phones.
