Commerce Ministry spokesman Yao Jian said at a news conference on Thursday that FDI growth in 2008 almost doubled that in 2007, meaning China has received more foreign investment in the last 17 years than any other country in the developing world.

But the strong growth slowed in recent months as the world's economy slumped. At the same time, China's outbound non-financial investment surged two thirds to above 40 billion US dollars.

Chinese companies have been scouring the globe for energy and raw materials to feed the nation's rapid growth. Meanwhile, exports rose 17 percent and imports 19 percent. Trade surplus increased 13 percent.
