Du Ying, deputy head of the National Development and Reform Commission, said at a meeting in Hefei, the capital of east China's Anhui Province that the steady increase in the grain output has helped reinforce people's confidence in the country's economic and social development.

But he pointed out that China will face a hard year for the agricultural sector in 2009, as the global financial crisis starts to cause issues with the world grain market. Du said prices of wheat, corn and rice started to fall in October.
