Special Report:   Mainland tourists visit Taiwan

Since Taiwan opened its doors to Chinese mainland tourists, more and more people from the mainland have shown an eagerness to travel to the island. In addition to the existing 8- to 10-day around-the-island tours, travel agencies are now promoting shorter 4- to 6-day tours to meet the varying demands.

A travel agency in Shanghai is planning to launch five- and six-day tour packages focused mainly on Taipei, which will cover Mount Ali and Sun Moon Lake. There are half the number of sightseeing destinations of the around-the-island tours, so visitors can take more time to enjoy each sight. The six-day tour package costs 6,880 yuan, 45 percent less than 10-day tours.

Liu Xiaojun, GM of Marketing Dept., China Youth Travel Service Shanghai, said, "The shorter trip is economical. It takes less time and costs less, at a price of five to seven thousand yuan. It's for tourists who don't have a lot of time to travel."

The travel agency is also planning to launch four-day trips to Taiwan in September, with a price of around 5,000 yuan. These shorter tour packages will be able to depart every day, because they will not depend on the weekend cross-strait charter flights to Taiwan. Insiders say as Taiwan's tourism market develops, travel agencies will promote routes with various themes and features based on travellers' preferences.
