China has become the latest country to declare war on plastic bags, in a drive to save energy and protect the environment.

Shoppers in downtown Beijing and other major cities seem quite supportive of the idea. Many shopping center and supermarket operators say, nearly 80 percent of the customers have prepared their own shopping bags. And only a few of them forget to bring their own. But some people also complain that their own bags are not enough to hold everything they buy.

A consumer said, "I did bring my bag and basket with me, but I've bought too much stuff, so I still need to buy a smaller plastic bag at the supermarket."
