Special Report:   2008 Beijing Olympic Games
Special Report:   2008 NPC & CPPCC sessions

Now let's have a look at some of the latest information released on the sidelines of the ongoing session of the National People's Congress.

The Head of China's quality watchdog Li Changjiang has assured participants and visitors to the Beijing Olympics that their food will be safe. He said an effective food safety monitoring network has been in place for Olympic food production, adding that the ongoing "Good Luck Beijing" test event of Olympic venues and the food safety system has been operating normally.

Meanwhile, Shanghai mayor Han Zheng said the maglev train line is not on the city's list of major projects in 2008. The environmental impact of the line has raised concerns among local residents. Han Zheng said the municipal government is soliciting public opinions and would invite national experts to evaluate the project. The mayor also said Shanghai has applied to the Central Government to build a Disneyland, and the best location should be Pudong New District. It would be the third Disneyland in Asia after Japan and Hong Kong.

China's Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor scheme, or QFII, has welcomed a newcomer. At the panel discussion of the NPC, Vice governor of the central bank Hu Xiaolian said that a foreign government agency has been approved as the first new QFII investor in more than a year, but she declined to name the agency. She said the move aims to help boost the weak domestic stock market.
