Special Report:   3rd China-U.S. SED

China and the US signed an agreement at the Third China-US SED on Thursday, outlining their collaboration to enhance the supervision of product quality and food safety.

China's quality watchdog has signed a collaborative agreement with US Health and Human Services on food safety. According to the agreement, the country has to inform the other side of any incidents that threaten the public's safety within two days. These include issues that threaten the public's health or involve food safety, product recalls and consumer fraud.

According to the agreement, all Chinese enterprises exporting goods to the US have to register at the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. The watchdog will supervise and inspect the entire manufacturing process.

Wei Chuanzhong, Deputy Director of AQSIQ said "The administration has built an electronic surveillance network. It can track the entire manufacturing process."

Wei also said that China has set up a system using "red and black names." Companies with good reputations will be listed on the red names list. Their goods do not have to be inspected upon export. For those companies on the black names list, they are given a certain period of time to improve their processes. Those who are found to have exported low quality goods will be fined 300m,000 yuan.
