Beijing has just announced a plan to promote technology that focuses on energy efficiency and water conservation for 2008. For the first time, the government has asked for public input on the issue via the Internet.
The plan will promote 17 technologies. For the Olympic Games in Beijing, almost 2 million energy-efficient lights will be put into use; 100 heating boilers will be rebuilt to be more efficient; a compactor capable of dealing with 400 tons of cooking waste will be used; and 200 rain water recycling systems will also be employed.
Zhang Yanyou, Member of Beijing Development & Reform Committee said "Next year, we plan to set up an energy fund. A part of the fund will be used to promote new technologies and products. And we will listen to our citizens and experts for advice... and amend our plan according to their needs."
Because many energy-efficient technologies are closely connected to Beijing residents' daily lives, the local government has opened the plan to the public. The public can advise on the project plan, fund allocations and technology applications.
This is the first time the Beijing government has asked for the public's advice on energy efficiency. And the government says it will continue to do so in the future.
