Special Report: High Level Int'l FS ForumChina is working on a new food safety law aimed at raising standards at every level of production. This is part of the country's ongoing efforts to guarantee product quality and food safety.
The State Council approved a new food safety draft law on Wednesday. It will be submitted to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for approval. This was according to quality watchdog chief Li Changjiang during a meeting with World Health Organization head Margaret Chan.
Li Changjiang, Director of AQSIQ said "This draft law comprehensively covers the standardization of the production, processing, sale and supervision of our food products. I believe that the promulgation of this law will certainly and effectively raise China's food safety situation and guarantee food safety and people's health."
Following the meeting, Li showed Chan a high-tech surveillance system carrying live pictures from border checkpoints and certain food processing factories, as well as his department's website.
The watchdog said earlier this week that the Chinese government has cracked down on illegal behavior. In their four-month quality-control campaign, authorities have caught 774 criminal suspects, who made or sold fake or substandard food and drugs.
