Special Report:   17th CPC National Congress

China has set in stone the country's effort to boost development of the private sector. According to a resolution adopted at the closing session of the 17th CPC National Congress, delegates have unanimously agreed that China will support and guide the development of the private sector.

Since the 16th national congress was held in 2002, the CPC has clarified it would firmly encourage, support and cultivate non-public economic sectors. But this is the first time that the initiative has made it into the country's constitution. Some areas which were previously off-limits to the private sector are now accessible, and big SOEs no longer enjoy exclusively treatments.

At the end of 2006, China had 4.94 million private businesses, involving a total investment of more than 7.5 trillion yuan.
